Off-Grid Living:
At Acorn Glade, the ethos is based on 'eco' or 'green-living'. As we believe strongly in conservation, your holiday experience is driven by renewable energy, from solar panels for electricity to air-source hot water.
Additional lighting is powered by romantic solar fairy lights in all units.
The log cabins and Yurt have solar lighting and USB mobile phone charging points.
To conserve water, all toilet sinks and showers are fitted with push-down taps and the Log Cabins Bluebell and Daisy each have an eco-friendly composting toilet.
There is also a woodland replanting scheme in operation with any trees which have been taken down for health & safety reasons replaced with new ones. Contact us directly if you require mobility assistance on-site, please read our access statement .
Wildlife & Rurality:
The open, still water and woodland area of Acorn Glade is a designated Local Wildlife Site. Within this wildlife haven you may see migrating birds, wild fowl, dragonflies and damselflies, as well as fish and amphibians.
If you wish to relax and fish during your stay there is a an unspoiled still-water fishing lake well stocked with an abundance of different varieties of fish.
(A day fishing pass available upon request, however, you will require an official rod licence, available from your local Post Office). see fishing on information page.
For avid bird watchers, there is a dedicated bird watching hide nestled in the woodland area and a variety of bird nesting boxes located around the site.
Acorn Glade (the Story so far):
The village of Melbourne dates back to the 9th century being recorded in the 1066 Domesday Book. The Acorn Glade site has been around for many years too. It was owned for a long time by the The Diocese of York until the 16th century when it was purchased by Melbourne Hall.
In the early 1800's a Brick & Tile Yard existed on the site (one of two brickyards in Melbourne) and was called Plantation Grange. They extracted clay to make locally sourced bricks over a 65 year period.
These bricks were used to construct many of the bridges of the Melbourne section of the Pocklington Canal (opened in 1818) and these bricks can still be seen today. Later bricks were transported by barge for use in the town of Pocklington.
The lake at Acorn Glade is a result of water from an underground spring filling the largest of the old clay pits.
Thereafter, we believe the Acorn Glade grounds and lake were possibly used as a recreational location for Melbourne Hall in around 1886. There was an iron girder bridge across the lake to the island (as part of the bridge supports have been uncovered at the far end of the lake).
In late 2013 work commenced to create an idyllic off-grid glamping business on the site of the old brickyard. In mid 2014 the Acorn Glade brand was born. It started off with Bluebell Log Cabin, plus Poppy & Daisy Yurts. In 2015 Acorn Glade was awarded the status of local wildlife site (LWS) by East Ridings of Yorkshire Council recognising the ecological importance and nature conservation.
In late 2015 Rose Gypsy Wagon was added to our accommodation portfolio. It then took 4 months over the winter to totally renovate her. Rose was added to the glamping site in the Spring of 2016 and has proved hugely popular with our guests.
In September, 2019 Wendy & Andrew took over Acorn Glade and continue to offer an enhanced, exciting, unique and romantic glamping experience to all guests. Rose Gypsy Wagon has now been retired. In her place is the hand crafted Rose Hollow log cabin plus we now have the exciting new unique wooden Daisy Roundhouse yurt.
Our story continues as we lovingly replant, renovate and care for this special site where nature gets to steer us as guardians.
In 2023 Acorn Glade was awarded the coveted accolade of best camping, glamping and holiday park East Yorkshire REYTA (Remarkable East Yorkshire Tourism Award)
We are now super excited to announce we are finalists for the REYTA 2024 for sustainable, ethical and responsible tourism.
