Sustainability

At Acorn Glade we are encouraging our guests to

Reduce, Reuse, Refill and wash, squash and Recycle.

We aim to inspire our guests to live more harmoniously with the land and what it gives us; we can all be the change we want to see. Every action counts and success in tackling climate change can only be achieved by working together.

Please see: is being sustainable attainable ?

Most of the fittings and furnishing have been upcycled, reused or handmade and we try to reduce the use of single use plastic as much as possible.

We use the alpaca fleece for making rugs etc or putting around the fruit trees to protect them in winter plus creating our woodland path way, avoiding using plastic liners, we run out of fleece so we work with the local sheep farmers who are all to happy to get rid of the fluff!

We ask our guests to join us in this quest by using our recycling facilities and composting bags for food waste as East Yorkshire now provides collection. Or we compost it for mulching the trees. Click here for further information.

Cleaning and Laundry

All of the cleaning products we use are eco products in refillable bottles along with washable reusable e-cloths etc. We use UK manufactured, eco-friendly products. With natural scent (smells lovely) The bed linen is washed on site and when possible dried in the fresh Yorkshire air and steam ironed. We purchase a lot of our products locally to support other businesses.

We are pretty much off grid with all of our units powered by solar panels. These also help to power the Chicken shed along with the Air source heat pump. The  taps in the bathrooms are press taps to avoid wastage and flooding. All of the lighting is movement activated. We have water collection throughout Acorn Glade.

The paths are all lit with solar lighting to reduce undue light pollution and all the units have window coverings to avoid to much light on site. We are awarded a local wildlife LWS site by East Riding Council recognising its ecological importance and nature conservation.

We aim to use a lot of the wood from the site as we have to remove unsafe trees and coppice areas. This is then seasoned for use in the wood burners and fire pit. If we have to remove a whole tree, we then replant others. Our fire lighters are locally sourced and are eco -friendly.

There is a compost loo ensuite to Bluebell Lodge for those midnight visits. Daisy Roundhouse Yurt also has its own compost loo.

In the Kitchen

We have locally made Jams, hot chocolate and coffee and our Graze Boxes are home-made and delivered from the next village. They can be pre ordered through calling or emailing via our booking systems welcome message. We will send you the link in our welcome email. We ask guests to leave any unwanted food in the fridge so we can compost it or perhaps offer it to our four legged member of staff, Beau. We are proud members of the Guardians of Grub for more information:

Travel & Transport

York train station is 10 miles away. There is a local bus from the station to Melbourne once a day. There is an easy park and ride into York situated at Grimston Bar.

We encourage our guests to leave the car in the car park to enjoy the local walks and the Pocklington canal.

We will shortly have two matching vintage bikes we call EEEEEE Yorkshire bikes as they are not electric just good old pedal power, the good thing is its flat around here! Guests can take their picnic with them in the wicker baskets.

Guests can also bring their own bikes these can be securely stored..

We are very conscious of the impact climate change is having and aim to do our bit towards reducing our foot print to a gentler one on our planet.
